About Hospice Scout

Choosing hospice care is one of the most important decisions a family will make. We believe that decision should be informed by real data — not marketing, not guesswork, and not whatever shows up first in a Google search.

Our Mission

Hospice Scout is the most comprehensive hospice care directory in the United States. We cover every Medicare-certified hospice provider — over 6,943 providers across 55 states and territories — with transparent quality data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

Our goal is simple: help families compare hospice providers using real quality metrics, explained in plain language, so they can make a confident decision during one of life's most difficult moments.

Data-Driven

Every rating and metric comes from CMS — the same agency that certifies these providers. We don't accept paid rankings or sponsored placements.

Transparent

We explain what each quality score measures and what it doesn't. No hidden agendas, no fine print. The data speaks for itself.

Plain Language

Healthcare data shouldn't require a medical degree to understand. We translate CMS metrics into language that families can actually use.

Family-First

We built this for families navigating one of life's hardest decisions. Everything about this site is designed to reduce stress, not add to it.

Our Data Sources

All provider data on Hospice Scout comes from publicly available CMS datasets:

  • Provider Directory — Names, addresses, phone numbers, and ownership types from the CMS Medicare Hospice Provider database.
  • Quality of Care Ratings — Based on the CMS Hospice Care Index (HCI), which tracks 10 operational quality indicators including visit frequency near death, nursing care minutes, and care transitions.
  • Patient Satisfaction — From the CAHPS Hospice Survey, where family caregivers rate their experience with communication, symptom management, emotional support, and overall care.

We sync this data regularly and generate editorial overviews for every provider, city, and state page to help families understand what the numbers mean in context.

Free and Independent

Hospice Scout is completely free to use. We do not charge families, and providers cannot pay for better placement or ratings. Our rankings are based solely on CMS data.
